Once each year, everyone who is everyone in the architectural openings industry – from coast to coast and even around the world – converge in a single U.S. city for the industry's preeminent event. The Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) proudly host its annual trade event, recently branded conNextions.
This year, the event will be held at the Orlando World Center Mariott in Orlando, Florida from May 4 through 6. As usual, the show features a number of seminars, education sessions and a show floor consisting of dozens of industry vendors and service providers.
This year's show will be even more widely anticipated than usual as the 2015 event (planned for Baltimore, Maryland) was cancelled just days prior to commencement. On April 27, 2015 the Governor of Maryland declared a 'State of Emergency', even bringing in the National Guard to support Baltimore police. This was done in the wake of violent demonstrations following the funeral of Freddie Gray, a suspect that died shortly after his arrest by Baltimore police. His death was attributed to injuries sustained during transportation in a police van. On April 25th, a major protest became so violent that it resulted in 34 arrests and injuries to 15 police officers. The DHI, along with the American Heart Association and Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association (AFCEA) all wisely chose to cancel or reschedule their planned events on the advice of local authorities.
This year's DHI event will be the first time the industry has gathered since the 2014 event in Dallas, Texas. For an industry as widespread and diverse as 'architectural openings', the opportunity to meet with colleagues is essential. For many, it is the only opportunity they will have to meet with vendors and clients 'in person' and get that valuable 'face-time'.
